Bag Policy

Small backpacks and handbags are permitted but are subject to a security check. Large bags, suitcases, and bulky luggage are not allowed inside, and there is no cloakroom or storage facility available.

Photography

You are welcome to take photos and videos for personal use. However, the use of flash, tripods, and selfie sticks is strictly forbidden to protect the artworks and ensure visitor safety.

No Food, Drinks, or Smoking

Food and beverages may not be consumed inside the museum rooms. Smoking, including e-cigarettes, is not permitted anywhere within the castle.

Conduct and Attire

Please do not touch any of the artworks or historic surfaces. While there is no strict dress code, modest attire is appreciated. Sturdy, comfortable shoes are highly recommended due to uneven floors and many stairs.

Common questions about visitor conduct

Is there a place to store my luggage?
No, Castel Sant'Angelo does not have a cloakroom or lockers for large bags or suitcases. You must make other arrangements for your luggage before arriving.
Can I use a stroller or pushchair inside?
It is not recommended. The castle has many stairs, narrow passages, and steep ramps that make navigating with a stroller very difficult. A baby carrier is a much better option.
Are pets allowed inside?
Only certified assistance dogs are permitted inside the museum. No other pets or animals are allowed.
Is there a dress code for Castel Sant'Angelo?
There isn't a strict dress code like at the Vatican. However, it is a historic site with chapels, so respectful clothing is advised. Comfortable, closed-toe shoes are essential for safety and comfort.
